About the event

Advanced Diploma in Person-centred Counselling & Psychotherapy

We are taking expressions of interest along with deposits for this exciting new Advanced Diploma in Person-centred Counselling & Psychotherapy.

For a long time Temenos has had many requests to run a course for Temenos graduates and colleagues who are working as Counsellors and Psychotherapists who want to return to the learning environment to consolidate their learning and confidence. This Advanced Diploma is an offering to meet this need.

The educational philosophy of Temenos is one that seeks to nourish the person of the practitioner so that the student is able to grow more fully into themselves, this will be the focus of both the tutors on the course. To get to know and support each of the students in a way that supports their growth towards becoming more fully the practitioner that they are. It is our belief that the congruent practitioner is the most potent practitioner. The nature of the group meetings enables the exploration and challenge of individual ways of being along with high levels of care and empathy which loosen conditionality and create an inevitable movement towards growth as a person and a practitioner.

This course is for Temenos graduates and graduates of other programmes who are currently practicing and are members of a Counselling & Psychotherapy Professional Association.

The tutor contact time on this course will be equivalent to the Temenos Diploma Group. The year will begin with a three day encounter group in October 2019 and will then continue with one module of 2 days per month between November and June 2020, with no module in May 2020.

These 2 day modules will be accompanied by 7 online seminars which will include participation from the course tutors and a number of different visiting tutors who will bring an advanced perspective to the theory and practice of the Person-centred approach. The online seminars will be held between 7.30pm and 9.30pm UK time on one evening per month beginning in November 2019 and concluding in May 2020.

The first module in November will be focused on students communicating their learning agreement for the year, as they discuss with the group who they are and what they want from the course.

As the course progresses through the year, each of the students will be required to prepare and deliver a presentation on an aspect of advanced Person-centred theory and how it relates to the practice of Counselling & Psychotherapy. Presentation topics are to be chosen by the students so that the area of investigation is one that sparks the students drive and curiosity in an area that they feel they most want and need to learn.

The modules do not follow a published curriculum, however, the student presentations delivered throughout the year create a curriculum that is bespoke to the learning needs of the group. The curriculum is therefore created from the impassioned learning of each of the students as they communicate what they have found to be most relevant to their personal development and professional practice.

To receive the Advanced Diploma in the Person-centred Approach students will be required to complete 2 pieces of writing. The first piece of writing will be an essay on an advanced understanding of Person-centred theory and how this theory can support an understanding and critique of psychopathology in their practice. The essay title will be chosen by the student and then agreed by the course tutors to make sure that the area of investigation is one that is relevant to their practice and most likely to stir the student’s curiosity and appetite for learning.

The second piece of writing will be a transcript and process analysis on a piece of work with a current client. The analysis will be focused, not on an analysis of the client, but on an analysis of the work of the practitioner. The invitation will be to re-examine their work in the light of their current understanding of theory, opening up areas for development and also acknowledging the experience and expertise that has been developed in their practice.

Both pieces of writing will need to be submitted in April 2020 and passed before the June module in order to successfully pass the year and receive the Advanced Diploma in Person-centred Counselling & Psychotherapy. Students who do not pass the written work by the end of the course will be awarded a certificate of attendance which can be used as part of their ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development as required by their Professional Association.

The course will conclude in June 2020 and the last module will be the opportunity to present an end of year learning report where each of the students will reflect on their learning journey throughout the time on the course, consolidating their learning and the impact on their practice.

All students will be required to be in practice at the time of application to the course and will need to support their application with a statement from their supervisor declaring their intention to support the student through the course.

At this time we are taking expressions of interest supported by deposits only, if we receive enough expressions of interest we will then begin the application process for this course. There will be a maximum 10 students on the course and admission will be on a first come first served basis with regard to successful applications received.

Deposits will be refunded if we do not have enough applications to run the course by 1st November 2019. Deposits can also be refunded to anyone who withdraws their expression of interest before the 1st November 2019. Any expressions of interest or applications that are withdrawn after the 1st of November 2019 will not be refundable.
